Angelina Jolie’s relationship with her father, Jon Voight, has had its complexities over the years, and their bond, as revealed in Voight’s recent interview with Variety, continues to experience significant ups and downs.

However, one thing remains steadfast for the 85-year-old actor, and that is his unwavering love for his grandchildren. Through Angelina, 49, and her ex-husband Brad Pitt, Voight is the proud grandparent of six children, and he cherishes this role dearly.

Despite the rocky stretches in his relationship with Angelina, Voight praises her and her family unit. He particularly singled out his youngest granddaughter, 16-year-old Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, for special recognition.

Vivienne recently celebrated a significant achievement by winning a Tony Award alongside the team of the Broadway hit “The Outsiders,” a production her mother helped produce and where Vivienne worked as a PA. The mother-daughter duo attended the ceremony together and joined the emotional team onstage when the play clinched the award for Best Musical.

On July 12, Vivienne, along with her twin brother Knox, turned 16 years old. During the interview, Voight revealed that he had a heartfelt gift planned for his granddaughter in light of her recent success and birthday.

Voight intended to send Vivienne a sketchbook and drawing as a celebratory present for her accomplishments with “The Outsiders,” as well as for her birthday. This sweet gesture underscores his affection and pride in her achievements.

Voight’s home is adorned with significant photographs of his daughter from when she was married to Brad Pitt, as well as magazine cut-outs of them holding their newborn twins—recorded during a period when Voight and Jolie were estranged. These relics reflect the timeline of their evolving relationship.

In another heartwarming move, Voight mentioned making a special trip to New York City while returning from the Cannes Film Festival, where “Megalopolis,” a film he appeared in directed by Francis Ford Coppola, premiered. His aim was to catch a production of “The Outsiders.” He expressed his amazement at the show and his deep admiration for Angelina, stating, “It was amazing. Angie is amazing.”

Voight’s strained relationship with his Oscar-winning daughter dates back to when he left her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, and his two children while they were still young. In recent years, they have made efforts to mend their bond.

Emotionally, Voight said, “I love my daughter—that’s No. 1. I am happy when Angie is happy. When she’s having a tough time, I’m having a tough time. When she is down, I’m down.”

Following the Tony Awards, the veteran actor told TMZ, “I’m very proud of Vivienne. I’m really proud of Angie because she really tries to encourage each of the kids to be what they want to be.” He elaborated on Angelina’s contribution to “The Outsiders,” indicating that she had coached the actors as well, testifying to her great directing skills.

Voight also shared insights into Vivienne’s pivotal role in getting the production moving. “Vivienne read the book and then went down to see the pre-Broadway play version near San Diego. She went down four times and she said, ‘Mom, you’ve got to see this,'” he explained. Vivienne’s enthusiasm was contagious, compelling Angelina to watch the musical. She was so impressed that she subsequently met with the original novelist, S.E. Hinton, to discuss the project.
