Kansas House unable to override veto on bill banning gender-affirming care for children

The Kansas Legislature voted to override Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors. The bill would block hormone therapy and other treatments for transgender youth. Opponents argued that denying this care could increase the risk of suicide among transgender children. Some Republicans supported the bill, claiming it would protect children from making life-altering decisions. However, Democrats and some Republicans believed the bill went too far in restricting speech and behavioral healthcare for transgender youths. Ultimately, the House fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto.
