Kansas lawmakers attempt to override governor’s veto of gender-affirming care ban falls short

The Kansas state House failed to override Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of a ban on gender-affirming care for minors, a victory for transgender rights advocates. Kelly applauded the decision, stating that divisive bills have no place in Kansas. The Republican-controlled Senate successfully voted to override the veto, but the House fell two votes short of the majority needed. The bill would have banned gender-affirming care for trans and nonbinary youth, and allowed lawsuits against doctors providing such care. Advocates celebrated the block of the bill, noting the solidarity in the transgender community. Last year, a similar bill was vetoed by the governor, but a sports ban targeting trans women and girls was successfully enacted.
