Kansas uses groundbreaking “psychological autopsy” in criminal case to understand fatal shooting victim’s mindset

Sergeant Brandon Hauptman of the Hays Police Department vividly remembers the dark, cold Halloween morning when he found Kristen Trickle near death in her home. She was found almost fully undressed with a gunshot wound under her chin. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she passed away. Kristen’s family, including her aunt and uncle, doubted the suicide ruling given her character and plans for the future. Suspicion fell on Colby Trickle, Kristen’s husband, who had financial motives and an online affair. After years of investigation, Colby Trickle was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison.
