Katie Hobbs, the Governor of Arizona, signs repeal of 1864 ban on almost all abortions

Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs of Arizona signed a bill to repeal a Civil War-era ban on most abortions, calling it the beginning of a fight to protect reproductive health care. The repeal may not take effect until after the legislative session in June or July. The effort to repeal the ban, which only allowed abortions to save a patient’s life, passed in a Senate vote. The law had been blocked since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Planned Parenthood Arizona filed a motion to prevent a pause in abortion services until the repeal takes effect, while advocates collect signatures for a ballot measure allowing abortions until around 24 weeks.
