Katie Holmes on coping as Suri Cruise pursues her secret showbiz dream

Katie Holmes is preparing for her life as an empty nester as her daughter Suri Cruise gets ready to move out for college.

The 45-year-old actress revealed her future plans in Town & Country’s September issue, saying, “The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me. I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week.'” Currently, Holmes’ book club meets about five times a year. Their latest discussion focused on the 2023 book “The Covenant of Water” by Abraham Verghese. Holmes mentioned she often reads to calm her mind.

Holmes, who has always encouraged her daughter’s passion for performance, is planning for her new chapter as Suri prepares to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. According to the magazine, Suri, who is 18, might pursue a career in fashion or acting. The young woman has lived with her mother in New York City for over a decade.

Carnegie Mellon boasts a roster of notable alumni from its College of Fine Arts, including Oscar-winner Holly Hunter, “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom Jr., Emmy-winner Billy Porter, Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto, Cheers’ Ted Danson, and the late pop art icon Andy Warhol.

In the interview, Holmes expressed her pride for Suri, who has already contributed vocals to two of her films, the 2023 drama “Rare Objects” and the 2022 romantic drama “Alone Together.” Holmes, who shares Suri with her ex-husband Tom Cruise, said, “I’m proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy.”

Speaking to Glamour in April 2023, Holmes shared that she always encourages Suri’s participation in her projects, stating, “I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her.” She added that including Suri in her work is an act of love, aimed at providing a “safe, beautiful, creative space” for her daughter.

In the Town & Country feature, Holmes looked back on her early adult years with fondness, reflecting on how exciting it is to learn about oneself. The September issue of the magazine captures Holmes in an artsy set of images, showcasing various high-fashion looks, including a Simone Rocha cape dress, a Michael Kors ensemble, and a Prada dress and hat.

Suri’s choice of college was confirmed in June when she was seen in a TikTok video wearing a Carnegie Mellon sweatshirt. The clip, set to Miley Cyrus’ “I’ll Always Remember You,” marked LaGuardia High School’s commitment day, highlighting the school’s significant role in Suri’s educational journey. Suri graduated from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City.

An insider told DailyMail.com that Suri is smart and well-prepared for this next chapter in her life. “She has a very close group of loyal friends, and she knows exactly where she comes from.”

With Suri leaving for college, Holmes is making adjustments in her life but insists that she’s incredibly proud and excited for her daughter’s future.
