Katie Holmes on Why She Won’t Let Hollywood Dictate Her Fashion Choices

Even after spending two decades in the entertainment industry, Katie Holmes remains steadfast in not allowing Hollywood to dictate her choices, whether in her work or personal style.

The actress recently shared her experiences and insights with Town & Country, discussing how she has navigated industry changes, especially with the increasing scrutiny on her fashion choices due to the rise of social media.

“Fashion is really big, and it didn’t used to be,” the Dawson’s Creek alum remarked. “As an actor, you weren’t necessarily photographed all the time on the street. It’s different now, and it’s flattering, but it doesn’t change how I live or dress.”

She emphasized her determination to maintain a life outside of industry pressures, noting, “I’m adamant about having a life and not letting this industry dictate decisions as simple as what I wear or as complicated as what I do. You don’t want to be afraid of anything, right?”

This independent approach extends to her professional endeavors. Holmes now has the luxury of being more selective about her projects, focusing on stories that inspire her, unlike earlier in her career when choices were more limited.

“Do I have 20 scripts at my door, all with the green light? No. Would that make life easier? Yes. Is that unrealistic? Yes,” the Coda star commented. “Everybody has to find their interesting story, try to put it together, and make poetry out of things. There’s a lot of thought that goes into the projects I work on, but at the end of the day you still want to create something that people will respond to. You’re always at the whim of someone.”

Holmes’ journey from her breakout role as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003, to today has been marked by significant accomplishments. Besides starring in hit films, she has ventured into producing, directing, and fashion. Most recently, she collaborated with the French brand A.P.C. and launched her production company, Lafayette Pictures.
