After a long, fun-filled summer, kids across the country are preparing to head back to school. This environment is ideal not only for learning but also for spreading germs. Luckily, Lysol is helping students become more aware of viruses and bacteria through its HERE for Healthy Schools program.

Keegan-Michael Key, renowned for his “Substitute Teacher” skit from the hit show Key & Peele and his recent appearance on the school-based sitcom Abbott Elementary, is the perfect ambassador for this campaign.

“Lysol has been doing this for about six years,” Key said of the company’s program. “I’m working with them to create these Lysol Minilabs Science Kits which include educational materials to help children learn about germs and healthy habits both in the classroom and at home. Who better than Lysol to do this? Children’s education and a strong foundation for learning are very important to me.”

The Minilabs Science Kits, developed with input from teachers, students, and Lysol scientists, engage students through games and activities, teaching them the significance of germ education within the classroom.

“The kits will have cards that explain different types of germs and how they’re spread,” Key described. “There will also be activity sheets and stickers for germ hotspots such as doorknobs and desktops. Additionally, lesson plans will guide educators on the best times to discuss and implement these practices using Lysol products to maintain a clean environment.”

Hands-on learning, while beneficial for child development, does pose some risk of spreading germs. That’s why Key believes this program is so essential.

“Hands-on work helps kids learn better as they remember tactile experiences more vividly,” he said. “However, this kind of learning also promotes germ spread. So, using products like Lysol’s disinfecting wipes and sprays, which kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria including cold, flu, and COVID-19 viruses, is vital.”

The importance of germ education has only increased since the 2020 pandemic, considering the rising COVID-19 cases across the United States.

“We still need to be diligent about COVID-19,” Key stated. “People tend to get complacent until they’re reminded of it. While we’re used to flu seasons and getting flu shots, COVID-19 hasn’t been ingrained in the same way. Lysol’s products can help us stay vigilant.”

To further reduce the spread of COVID-19 in schools, Lysol will donate its Minilabs Science Kits to Title I classrooms nationwide. Key hopes that these interactive kits will serve as a constant reminder for students and teachers to maintain hygiene at school and beyond.

“This initiative is about teaching kids to be diligent about germs. It’s about remembering to wash hands, wipe down doorknobs, and maintain higher health standards in classrooms.”
