King Charles Alters Royal Tour Plans Amid Cancer Treatment

The King and Queen are embarking on a significant tour this autumn with a notable change in their itinerary.

Charles, 75, and Camilla, 76, will travel to Australia and Samoa in October to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.

During their visit to Australia, upon the invitation of the country’s government, they will engage in various activities in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales.

However, a planned stop in New Zealand will not happen due to Charles’s ongoing cancer treatment.

Initially, there was hope that the King might visit the island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. But doctors advised avoiding an extended schedule to ensure his continued recovery, as confirmed by a Buckingham Palace spokesperson.

The palace emphasized that the visit’s limitation to Samoa and Australia only was agreed upon after consulting the Australian and New Zealand prime ministers, considering time and logistical pressures. “Their Majesties send their warmest thanks and good wishes to all parties for their continued support and understanding,” the palace added.

The couple’s program will be subject to doctors’ advice, with modifications to be made if necessary on health grounds. A detailed itinerary will be announced in due course, but CHOGM will gather delegations from 56 countries across Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific.

This will mark Charles and Camilla’s first official visit to Australia since the King ascended the throne. Their last visit Down Under was in 2018, where they represented the late Queen Elizabeth II at the Commonwealth Games.

Although diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, a condition confirmed by the palace in February, the King has resumed public-facing duties since April. Over the past few months, he has participated in numerous engagements, including Trooping the Colour, Garter Day, Royal Ascot, and the Japan State Visit.

Moreover, the King recently welcomed Britain’s new prime minister, Keir Starmer, following Labour’s majority in the General Election earlier this month.
