King Charles Braves Rain for Solo Event Loved by Late Royal

(Euan Cherry)

King Charles braved the rain on Saturday as he attended the Mey Highlands Games, kicking off his summer break in style.

The event, first held in 1970 to commemorate the birthday of the late Queen Mother, has since become a beloved yearly tradition. The Queen Mother, who was the King’s grandmother, enjoyed the event so much that she encouraged organizers to make it an annual occurrence.

Despite the wet weather, the monarch arrived at the event on Saturday, donning a traditional kilt. Accompanied by a tan coat, a tartan tie, and knee-high socks, he kept the cold at bay. As he exited his car, he was also seen holding an umbrella.

To escape the rain, the King huddled in a tent with other attendees to watch the games. Events included a tug-of-war contest and a group of children performing a traditional dance.

Charles seemed to thoroughly enjoy the festivities. He was seen laughing on several occasions and grinning as he shook hands with members of the crowd, including a young baby.

The King arrived in Scotland earlier in the week, visiting a giant peat bog in Caithness that has recently been granted UNESCO world heritage site status.

Similarly dressed for this earlier appearance, Charles wore Highland attire including a Sgian Dubh – a dagger hidden in his sock – and a cornflower in the lapel of his tweed jacket. He embraced the Scottish tradition wholeheartedly.

The King and Queen are expected to host their families at their Scottish residence, Balmoral, with the castle closing to the public on August 11. It has been noted, however, that an invite has not been extended to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

People reported that royal sources confirmed Harry and Meghan had been snubbed, which has been the case since they stepped down as senior members of the royal family in 2020.

Earlier this week, People also reported that Harry and Charles were no longer in contact. “He gets ‘unavailable right now,'” a friend of Harry’s told the publication. “His calls go unanswered. He has tried to reach out about the King’s health, but those calls go unanswered too.”
