Kodi Smit-McPhee Stuns in Versace at Venice Film Festival for ‘Maria,’ ‘Disclaimer’

Two world premieres at the Venice Film Festival in one night? That’s exactly what Oscar-nominated actor Kodi Smit-McPhee achieved on Thursday at Palazzo del Cinema. It turned out to be a busy evening not only for him but also for a tearful Angelina Jolie and her security detail, all thanks to the back-to-back screenings of his latest projects.

Known for his Oscar-nominated role in Jane Campion’s Western drama The Power of the Dog, Smit-McPhee made quite an entrance at Sala Grande. He donned a glitzy black outfit from Versace’s 2024 ready-to-wear collection, styled by Emma Kalfus. The ensemble included black skinny pants, an embellished jacket, and movie star shades, paired with a silver chain and shiny patent leather boots.

On the red carpet, Smit-McPhee initially appeared to support his role in Alfonso Cuáron’s Apple TV+ limited series Disclaimer. The series, which also stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, and Sacha Baron-Cohen, features McPhee as the son of Blanchett and Baron-Cohen’s characters. It tells the story of a celebrated journalist (played by Blanchett) who discovers she’s the inspiration behind a novel that could expose her secrets.

Not long after, he returned to the red carpet for the world premiere of Maria, a biopic directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie as the legendary opera diva Maria Callas. In Maria, Smit-McPhee plays Mandrax, an arts journalist who may exist only in Callas’ imagination.

Smit-McPhee is no stranger to making a fashion statement. During the awards season for The Power of the Dog, he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his approach to style and his inspirations.

“I’m completely in love with surrealism, the avant-garde, the abstract. I have been ever since I could walk and talk, maybe even before. I’ve had such vivid memories of dreams throughout my life and have been very conscious in the dream state and the kind of abstract world that it is; it’s quite psychedelic,” he stated. “It’s made me a very curious person, and it’s made me study various forms of art, spirituality, and philosophy. I feel like I want to resemble that within who I am, and I want to represent that — but mainly with imagery, through symbolism. And fashion is that: something that doesn’t have to be defined. I have to be completely aware of my brand and how I represent myself as Kodi Smit-McPhee the actor and how the world sees me.”
