Late Bob Barker Honored for Animal Welfare Efforts with New Boat

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a marine life protection nonprofit, recently named their newly acquired anti-poaching boat after Bob Barker, who, in addition to hosting The Price Is Right, was a dedicated animal rights activist. Barker pioneered campaigns and influenced fans to join in the fight for sea animals.

The M/V Bob Barker will be employed in preventing poachers from further depleting endangered marine species, focusing primarily on the Western Hemisphere. According to Sea Shepherd CEO Pritam Singh, the 130-foot sea vehicle will carry forward Barker’s legacy of protecting marine life.

Barker first joined the nonprofit in 2009 and left a significant void after his passing last year. The group, noted for multiple successful missions against sea poachers, attributes many of their accomplishments to Barker’s contributions.

Singh highlighted that Barker was aware of his massive platform and used it effectively to raise awareness, funds, and interest in better living conditions for animals. Barker’s brother, Kent Valandra, also spoke to his courage and dedication, emphasizing how freely Barker gave to his passion.

Barker lived his convictions as a vegetarian and ended every episode of The Price Is Right with the phrase, “This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population—have your pets spayed or neutered.” He even refused to host the 1987 Miss USA Pageant because fur was being used in the event.

The late TV personality also founded the DJ&T Foundation in honor of his mother, Matilda Valandra, and his wife, Dorothy Jo. This foundation has been responsible for millions of dollars in funding animal rescue initiatives, parks, and animal neutering efforts across the U.S.
