Listen to Andra Day Cover the Classic Hymn ‘I Know Who Holds Tomorrow’

Andra Day has delivered a beautiful rendition of the classic hymn “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow,” originally penned by Ira Stanphill in 1950. This version finds its place in the opening and closing scenes of Lee Daniels’ latest film, The Deliverance, which also features Day.

The movie, now available on Netflix, is a horror narrative centered on a family living in Indiana. They encounter bizarre, demonic occurrences that eventually convince them their house is a gateway to hell. Andra Day plays a single mother named Ebony. The ensemble cast also includes Glenn Close as her mom and Mo’Nique as a social worker. Additional cast members are Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Omar Epps, and Caleb McLaughlin.

The official synopsis states, “Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother battling her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. When strange happenings inside the home raise suspicions from Child Protective Services and threaten to break the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself in a fight for her life and the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story, The Deliverance is directed by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels and stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique in a genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.”

Previously, Day starred in Daniels’ 2021 biographical film The United States vs. Billie Holiday. For her exceptional performance, she garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, won a Golden Globe, and earned a Grammy for the film’s soundtrack.

In May, the actress and singer released her album, Cassandra (Cherith). Written and produced by Day, she described it as “a journey through my soul, from a state of being already full rather than from a place of lack.” She continued, “It’s an intimate reflection of my personal experiences and growth, presented through the language of music.”

Earlier this year, Day took center stage at Allegiant Stadium to perform the Black national anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as part of Super Bowl LVIII. The previous year, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph made history as the first Black person to perform the song during the pre-game ceremony of the Super Bowl.
