College campus protesters are calling for divestment from companies linked to Israel or weapons manufacturers. Divestment means universities stop investing in these companies with their endowment funds. Some universities, like Columbia and UC, have refused to divest, while others, like Brown, are open to discussing proposals. This isn’t new – in the 1980s, Columbia students successfully pushed for divestment from companies doing business in apartheid South Africa.
