Louisiana’s Congressional Map Blocked by Court, Requires Second Majority-Black District

A federal court blocked Louisiana from using a congressional map with a second majority-Black district, finding it violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The case may go to the Supreme Court under the Voting Rights Act. The court ruled the map cannot be used in future elections and a hearing is set for next steps. Plaintiffs argued the map was racially gerrymandered. The new map reduces the Black voting-age population in a district to 51% and creates a new district at 53%. The fight over the map could impact the House majority in November.
