Louisiana’s congressional map temporarily halted by federal court

A federal court has blocked Louisiana from using its new congressional map for the 2022 elections, following a redistricting battle over the rights of Black voters. The court found the map violated the Constitution due to racial gerrymandering, with judges appointed by both Trump and Clinton offering differing opinions. The case will likely be appealed to the Supreme Court, with a deadline approaching for finalizing the map. Republican lawmakers passed the challenged map with two majority-Black districts after a previous map was found to dilute Black voters’ strength. The Supreme Court’s past rulings on the Voting Rights Act have influenced this ongoing legal battle.
