Lung association finds 131 million Americans living in areas with unhealthy pollution levels

Nearly 40% of people in the U.S. are living in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution, as climate change worsens, according to the American Lung Association. The report showed an increase in people exposed to unhealthy air quality between 2020 and 2022. Wildfires are a growing pollution source, undoing some of the progress made by the Clean Air Act. Pollutants from wildfires can lead to health issues such as asthma and pregnancy complications. While ozone pollution has improved, particle pollution remains a concern, especially in the West, where wildfires are contributing significantly to poor air quality. EPA policies could help reduce pollution if implemented effectively.
