Man Dies in Police Custody on Sunday

Step.- The El Paso Police (EPPD) have confirmed that the death of a man after an incident on Sunday afternoon, April 14 in the South Central area of El Paso was an “in-custody death.” The man, identified as Jonathan Rose Eddens, 35, died during the incident.

The “critical incident” took place at 3:15 p.m. in the 3300 block of Alameda. Initial reports suggested that the man was weaving in and out of traffic and later died after being transported to the hospital.

Video footage captured by bystanders showed police chasing the man and eventually subduing him to the ground. The incident is currently under investigation by the Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit, the Texas Rangers, and the Internal Affairs Division.

“The investigation is ongoing and details are limited at this time. We are committed to transparency and will provide updates as more information becomes available. We thank the public for their patience and understanding during this time,” police stated in a news release.
