A 33-year-old Texas man, Tony Earls Jr., has been indicted for murder in the killing of 9-year-old Arlene Alvarez in February 2022, after a previous grand jury declined to indict him. Earls was at a bank when he was robbed, began firing at the suspect, and inadvertently shot and killed Arlene as she was passing by in a truck with her family. Arlene was described as caring and well-liked. Special prosecutor Warren Diepraam stated that Earls had no justification to shoot into the passing vehicle. The case is ongoing, and Earls faces five years to life in prison if convicted.
