Mayor Stoney of Richmond decides not to pursue Virginia governor candidacy, opts to run for lieutenant governor instead

Democratic Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney has decided to drop his bid for Virginia governor in 2025 and instead run for lieutenant governor. Stoney, a former member of ex-Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration and a two-term mayor, made the announcement after considering his family situation and the competitiveness of his primary bid against U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger. Spanberger, a former CIA officer and strong candidate, has already secured the nomination of Clean Virginia and is seen as a history-making candidate as Virginia has never had a female governor. Stoney’s switch to the lieutenant governor race adds to the growing list of candidates running for the position.
