Modern ‘Dorian Gray’ Series in Development at Netflix by Rogers, Mimoun & Berlanti

EXCLUSIVE : The Picture Of Dorian Gray is getting a TV series treatment with The Grays , which is in development at Netflix, Deadline has learned. It hails from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television where the company is based. A rep for Netflix declined to comment.

Written by Katie Rose Rogers, The Grays is a contemporary take on the Oscar Wilde classic about our fascination with eternal youth set against the backdrop of the modern beauty industry. In a twist on the gothic novel, the series revolves around siblings Basil and Doran Gray.

Fittingly, two of the project’s executive producers are siblings Katie Rose Rogers (Supergirl) and Robbie Rogers (All American), who worked together on the Emmy-nominated limited series Fellow Travelers. Also executive producing are Rina Mimoun, who serves as showrunner; Lee Toland Krieger, who is directing; as well as Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman.

In the 1891 novel, Basil is Dorian’s artist friend who is infatuated with his beauty. After Dorian sells his soul, Basil paints a portrait of him that ages and gets distorted while Dorian — keeping his youthful, beautiful looks — descends into self-indulgent sensualism and hedonism and eventually kills Basil, along with others who try to intervene.

The book has been the subject of numerous feature and TV adaptations.

Mimoun is coming off serving as executive producer and showrunner on Berlanti Prods.’ Max series The Girls On The Bus. Krieger has been executive producer/director on the company’s You, Dead Boy Detectives and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina — all for Netflix — as well as the CW’s Superman & Lois and the upcoming Brilliant Minds for NBC. Like Berlanti Prods., Mimoun, as well as Krieger and his 72nd Street Prods., are under deals at WBTV.

At Netflix, Berlanti Prods. and WBTV also have in the works the high-profile Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series, which landed at the streamer in April with a major commitment.
