Mom of Georgia shooting suspect says son texted ‘I’m sorry’ that morning

Recent events have unfolded in Winder, Georgia, following a tragic shooting incident at Apalachee High School. Colt Gray, a 14-year-old boy, is suspected of opening fire at the school, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, along with injuries to nine others.

The chilling day began for Colt’s mother, Marcee Gray, who received a series of distressing texts from her son. The last message he sent before the incident read, “I’m sorry, Mom.” Marcee revealed that Colt’s father had received similar messages just 15 minutes earlier, wherein Colt expressed remorse and reassured them that they were not to blame.

Marcee described feeling “petrified” upon reading the messages and decided to call the school for more information. It was during this call that she received the heartbreaking text from Colt, further intensifying her anxiety as a concerned mother.

Compounding her worries, Marcee had reached out to the school just six days prior, seeking inpatient treatment for Colt, which he had agreed to. Her fears about her son’s well-being had been escalating, leading her to take proactive steps to get him help.

The shooting occurred on a Wednesday, marking a devastating event for the community and the school. Witnesses have recounted their experiences, with several teachers alerting the authorities during the chaos.

Upon hearing the news of the shooting, Marcee recalled falling to the ground in despair, convinced of the worst outcome. Nearly a week later, she continues to grapple with a tumult of emotions ranging from debilitating anxiety to feelings of guilt and disgust.

In her reflection, Marcee expressed her deep sorrow for the victims and their families, stating, “What happened to them and their sweet, innocent babies is just unfathomable.” In a heartfelt sentiment, she offered to take their place if it meant alleviating their suffering.

If given the chance to speak with her son, Marcee would assure him of her love and could emphasize that he is not at fault for the tragedy that unfolded. However, she refrained from placing blame on anyone specifically.

Legal proceedings have begun against Colt Gray, who is facing four counts of felony murder, with prosecutors indicating that additional charges will likely be filed. His father, Colin Gray, is also in a precarious legal situation, facing multiple charges including involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. Accusations against him suggest that he knowingly allowed Colt to possess a firearm.

Reports indicate that the gun used in the shooting was an AR-style weapon allegedly gifted to Colt for Christmas by his father. Marcee revealed her shock upon discovering that the gun was specifically intended for Colt. She noted that while she had been aware of her husband’s gun collection, she had no idea that this particular weapon was involved.

Colt and Colin Gray appeared in court for the first time on a recent Friday. Neither has entered a plea, with both scheduled to return to court on December 4. The weight of this incident looms heavily over the community and highlights the urgent conversations surrounding mental health support and firearm access, igniting a broader discussion regarding school safety and security protocols.

As the investigation continues, the impacts of this heartbreaking event will likely be felt for a long time, as families and community members come to terms with the profound loss and traumatic experience of that day.
