MTV’s Role in Showcasing Texas Talent Like ZZ Top

Yes, the glory days of MTV have seen many amazing artists, including some from Texas. Back when the network made its debut in 1981, we’ve witnessed the rise of some of the biggest names in Texas music on its programming. Pantera, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, Toadies, and of course ZZ Top. Among these artists, ZZ Top holds a special place, and even their music video made it to MTV’s Top 100 music videos of all time.

Although ZZ Top wasn’t among the first bands to be featured on MTV, they had a massive video hit in 1983. When MTV compiled their Top 100 Music Videos list in 1999, a song from ZZ Top’s Eliminator album was included. You might be wondering whether it was “Sharp Dressed Man” or the video with the iconic spinning guitars, “Legs“.

Surprisingly, it was neither. It was the band’s first single off the album, “Gimme All Your Lovin‘” that secured a spot at #43 on MTV’s list. Yes, the video featuring the iconic red Ford Coupe and the beautiful ladies earned its place among the top 100.

Even though the video reached #43, it’s noteworthy to mention what company it keeps. The video outranked Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” which was at #45, Aerosmith’s “Janie’s Got a Gun” at #48, Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” at #56, and just edging into the list at #100, Green Day’s “Basket Case“. Indeed, that’s some impressive company to be around. The inclusion of ZZ Top’s hit in this prestigious list reconfirms what fans have always known — the little band from Houston can rock hard.

Furthermore, the band also enjoyed immense success at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in 1984, adding to their accolades and reinforcing their impact on the music video era.
