If you’re on the hunt for your next murder mystery series, “Lady in the Lake” on Apple TV+ should be on your radar. This limited series, based on Laura Lippman’s novel, stars Natalie Portman as a 1960s housewife turned investigative reporter. She dives into the case of a missing woman named Cleo Sherwood, played by Moses Ingram, whose body is found in a city park lake. The stars of the show, including Portman, Ingram, and Noah Jupe, celebrated the premiere in New York City on July 11.

The series marks the final project of the late Jean-Marc Vallée, the Emmy-winning director of “Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects.” He served as an executive producer and had a significant influence on the series, despite passing away in 2021. Portman shared her sentiments, stating, “It was devastating that Jean-Marc passed just before we started [filming]. He was the one who brought me the material initially, and he facilitated one of the greatest collaborations of my life with [creator] Alma Har’el. I’m very indebted to him.”

Fellow cast members Noah Jupe and Moses Ingram also expressed their admiration for Portman. Ingram described her first day on set with Portman as overwhelming and mentioned she continues to feel that way. Jupe echoed these sentiments, sharing how Portman impressed him with her kindness and lack of ego, despite her successful career.

Portman’s sense of humor was also a highlight for Jupe, who appreciated her dark sense of humor that matched his own. He recounted a moment on set where a dark joke led to shared laughter, marking a bonding moment between them.

For Jupe, this series is also a reunion with Alma Har’el, having previously worked with her on “Honey Boy” in 2019. Jupe spoke about the trust and friendship he shares with Har’el, adding that this connection made working on the series a significantly positive experience.

Although “Lady in the Lake” is set in Baltimore, a time period and place before her time, Ingram shared fond memories and stories about the city from her older relatives. She reflected on Pennsylvania Avenue as a cultural hub, appreciating how the show brought that history to life. Ingram stepped into the role after Lupita Nyong’o exited the project in May 2022, mentioning that she didn’t connect with Nyong’o during the transition.

One of the pivotal moments in the series occurs at the end of Episode 5, where Portman’s character crosses ethical boundaries to get her story. Commenting on this, Portman remarked, “I don’t think I know any journalist who has done what Maddie does, thank god.” She continued, “It’s unethical, but we don’t judge our characters; we just explore their inner lives.”

Looking ahead, Ingram is set to appear in Joshua Oppenheimer’s film “The End,” co-starring Tilda Swinton, George MacKay, and Michael Shannon. Ingram described the experience as a wild ride and praised Swinton, calling her one of her favorite people.
