NC Poll: Robinson Trails by 14 Points, 18% Undecided in Governor’s Race

In the race for North Carolina’s governor seat, Republican candidate Mark Robinson is currently facing a significant challenge from Democratic challenger Josh Stein. A recent High Point University/SurveyUSA poll reveals that Stein holds a 14-point lead over Robinson, with many voters still indicatively undecided.

The poll results, released on Thursday, show that Stein garners 48 percent of voter support, while Robinson trails at 34 percent. Notably, 18 percent of respondents are still uncertain about their choice.

Robinson, who is serving as the lieutenant governor of North Carolina, has attracted attention over his controversial remarks regarding reproductive rights. In the past, he has characterized abortion as both “murder” and “genocide.” He has made statements in speeches labeling women who undergo abortions as murderers.

However, recent developments indicate that Robinson may be shifting his position on this contentious issue. Earlier this month, he released an advertisement that personalizes the topic by recounting his wife’s experience with abortion.

Financially, the candidates are approaching fundraising very differently. According to campaign filings from July, Stein reported raising $13.8 million during the second quarter of 2023, while Robinson raised significantly less at $5.1 million.

Polling data from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ indicates that Stein maintains a solid lead with 46.2 percent of voter support, compared to Robinson’s 36.8 percent.

The same survey highlighted a closely contested race at the presidential level in North Carolina, with Vice President Kamala Harris holding a narrow edge over former President Donald Trump by just 1 percentage point—46 percent to 45 percent.

Adding to the intrigue of North Carolina’s political landscape, election forecasting group Sabato’s Crystal Ball has adjusted its outlook for the state from “leans Republican” to “toss-up.” This shift suggests a growing momentum for Democratic candidates, propelled by increased support for Harris.

The High Point University survey was conducted between August 19-21, 2023, involving 1,053 registered voters from North Carolina. The poll carries a margin of error of 4 percentage points, highlighting the competitive nature of the upcoming election.

As the electoral season progresses, the dynamics of the race will likely continue to evolve, making North Carolina a crucial battleground in the upcoming gubernatorial and presidential elections.
