Nearly 300 arrests made during protests at Columbia and City College as mayor accuses groups of radicalizing youth.

Columbia University called in the NYPD to remove approximately 300 protesters who had set up a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus. Mayor Eric Adams blamed “outside agitators” for the situation, stating that there is a movement to radicalize young people. Columbia’s president, Dr. Minouche Shafik, expressed her sadness at the events and called in police for safety reasons. Columbia’s decision to involve law enforcement was met with mixed reactions from students, with some feeling safe and others criticizing the use of force. The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ New York chapter denounced the university’s decision, stating that students were on the right side of history for protesting against alleged genocide in Gaza.
