Netflix Films Season-Long Boston Red Sox Documentary at Polar Park

WORCESTER — There was a buzz of excitement at Polar Park on Thursday as an influx of extra cameras and microphones were spotted around the stadium.

A team of 18 members from Netflix visited the home turf of the Worcester Red Sox for their doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons, as part of Netflix’s ongoing documentary project that follows the 2024 Boston Red Sox season.

The Netflix crew witnessed a thrilling 9-8 walk-off win for Worcester in the first game, followed by a second game where the Bisons defeated the WooSox 8-5.

WooSox utilityman Eddy Alvarez shared his experience of being mic’d up by the Netflix crew. “I’m pretty used to wearing mics from my career, so I almost forgot that I had it on,” said Alvarez. He appreciated the opportunity to provide fans with a glimpse into the daily life of baseball players, capturing everything from major league action to the prospects and veteran players like himself. “It’s cool for the fans out there to get a little insight,” he added.

Netflix mic’d up various WooSox players, including Alvarez, Triston Casas, and Jamie Westbrook, as well as a few coaches. Their aim is to capture an inside look at the happenings within Polar Park.

The streaming service has two documentaries lined up about the Red Sox. The first documentary, set to debut in 2025, will offer behind-the-scenes access to players, coaches, and executives throughout the 2024 season. The second project, an untitled documentary set to release later this year, will look back at the historic 2004 Boston Red Sox season.

When asked what it was like to wear a microphone during the Triple-A game, Alvarez said, “You forget you have it on. You just kind of go about your business and take it a pitch at a time.”

Interestingly, Alvarez had already held a microphone earlier in the week when he joined a media scrum inside the WooSox dugout. This was before Triston Casas’ first rehab start in Worcester on Tuesday. In a playful moment, Alvarez asked Casas about his Olympic experience in 2021. Both were teammates on the USA team that won a silver medal in Tokyo, Japan.

Alvarez explained, “He [Casas] probably doesn’t get asked often enough, so I figured I’d peek my head in and ask him a couple of questions about the Olympics and him being an Olympian and all. It was great to share a baseball field and a moment like that with a guy like that as well.”

As the week continued, the presence of numerous cameras and microphones drew curiosity and conversation at Polar Park. The reason? “Cuz Netflix is in town.”
