Netflix Sets September Premiere for New Vince McMahon Docuseries

WWE has largely distanced itself from Vince McMahon. The former chairman of the company gradually lost his grip on corporate control in his final two years, due to a sexual misconduct investigation that initially led to his retirement. Eventually, this return circled back to a resignation. McMahon is now under investigation for sexual abuse and sex trafficking. His resignation came just days after WWE announced a landmark deal with Netflix, bringing the flagship broadcast WWE Monday Night Raw to the streaming service in January 2025. When queried about McMahon during press conferences, WWE talents and personalities, including WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, and John Cena, have consistently dismissed the subject, opting to focus on the company’s future.

Netflix has decided to tackle the McMahon situation head-on. The streaming giant announced on social media that it will premiere a six-part docuseries titled Mr. McMahon on September 25th. The series chronicles “the rise and fall of WWE’s controversial founder.” Executive producers Chris Smith, known for Tiger King, and Bill Simmons, CEO of The Ringer, are behind this project. The docuseries will feature interviews with McMahon himself prior to his resignation, as well as sit-downs with his family, notable wrestling figures, and journalists who unraveled the allegations that led to his departure.

Bill Simmons revealed back in January 2023, “Vince hasn’t really spoken publicly about all the allegations and the NDAs that he signed, and all that stuff, we haven’t heard him talk about it. I’m working on this massive docuseries right now about him, which is, obviously, that keeps evolving.”

Mr. McMahon has been in development for over two years, with Netflix initially pushing forward with the concept in Summer 2022. The journey to it premiering has been fraught with obstacles and cancellation concerns, especially after Netflix obtained the broadcast rights to WWE Monday Night Raw. In February, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria dismissed questions about the streamer’s stance on the recent allegations against McMahon, saying, “Well, Vince McMahon, he’s gone. He’s not there. He’s gone.”

Mr. McMahon premieres on Netflix on September 25th. WWE Monday Night Raw will make its debut on the streaming service in January 2025, and this launch is expected to mark the beginning of John Cena’s farewell tour.
