Netflix’s ‘Receiver’ Showcases Davante Adams’ 2023 Season Frustrations

The 2023 season for the Las Vegas Raiders was marked by numerous highs and lows. This rollercoaster experience inevitably led to frustration for some players, including star wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams is one of five players featured in the new Netflix series ‘Receiver,’ which offers an intimate look at what he went through during the 2023 season. A significant change for Adams came at the quarterback position when the Raiders released Derek Carr, Adams’s college teammate and close friend.

In the series, Adams expressed that he might never have wanted to be traded to the Raiders if it hadn’t been for Carr’s presence, according to Carter Landis of YourCentralValley.com:

“I can’t say that I would have made this change if it wasn’t for him being here and us lowkey plotting on this since we left school together,” Adams said during the episode about his trade from the Packers to the Raiders in 2022.

The close relationship between Carr and Adams is well documented, making it likely difficult for Adams to watch him be released. To fill Carr’s shoes, the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo, but the veteran quarterback faced challenges connecting with Adams as he was recuperating from foot surgery. During OTAs and training camp, Adams pointed out their struggle to sync:

“Work together,” Adams can be heard saying during a practice. “We gotta get on the same page. I don’t know if he saw the way I ran it, or if he saw — just being able to go back here versus getting here to do that.”

Adams’s frustrations were compounded by injuries that plagued him throughout 2023. He suffered a shoulder injury early in the season against the Chargers, and the injury lingered, hampering his performance. He continually took big hits, culminating in an outburst during a game against the Patriots:

Later, the game against the New England Patriots is shown, and Adams takes a big hit from safety Jabrill Peppers. On the sideline, Adams expresses his frustration with his injuries.

“I gotta get the f— out of here before I lose my f—ing life,” Adams said angrily. “I ain’t never been hit this many f—ing times in my career. Every game, I get f—ed up.”

Clearly, the 2023 season won’t be one Adams looks back on fondly. But with these struggles now in the past, Adams remains optimistic about the future. He still believes in the Raiders’ potential to turn things around and is looking forward to a standout performance for both himself and his team in 2024.

Despite often wearing his emotions on his sleeve, Adams has consistently indicated his desire to stay with the Raiders. However, rumors about a possible reunion with Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets have been swirling. Adams recently revealed that Rodgers continues to try and recruit him to join the Jets via trade, and the star quarterback recently fueled these speculations further by telling reporters how eager he is to play with Adams again.
