Nevada parents taken into custody when 11-year-old discovered in makeshift “prison” constructed years earlier

A Nevada couple, Misty Scanlan, 46, and Jeffery Scanlan, 41, were arrested for child abuse and neglect after police found their 11-year-old child in a large metal enclosure resembling a jail cell. The police were called by a truancy officer who heard screams from the house. The father took 40 minutes to open the door for the police, and inside, they found the boy, who had severe Autism spectrum disorder, wearing a diaper and with feces smeared in the enclosure. The other children were taken into protective custody, and the 11-year-old was sent to the hospital. The Scanlans were released on a $5,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in court in May.
