New Channel Offers Escape for Ships Trapped in Baltimore Harbor.

A new, deeper temporary channel has opened in Baltimore’s Port, allowing some of the biggest ships trapped behind the wreckage of Key Bridge to finally escape. The Panama-flagged Balsa 94 was the first to pass through the channel, followed by other cargo ships, as marine traffic and commerce slowly resume. While a limited window is open for bigger vessels to pass, the channel will close briefly next week to protect workers during the delicate cleanup phase. The full shipping channel is expected to reopen by the end of May, with smaller temporary channels still operational for essential commercial traffic in the meantime.
