New Jersey rattled by 2.9 magnitude earthquake

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake hit New Jersey near Gladstone in Somerset County around 50 miles from New York City at 9:49 a.m. on Saturday. No damage was reported. This followed a rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake three weeks earlier which caused visible shaking in New York City but no structural damage or injuries. Seismologists warned of potential aftershocks, with at least 50 recorded since the initial quake. While the region has no active fault lines, older lines dating back millions of years can be intermittently reactivated due to tectonic plate movement, according to USGS research geologist Jessica Thompson Jobe.
