New Report Claims Los Angeles Holds Top Spot for Worst Air Quality

Residents in Los Angeles and Long Beach are breathing the worst air in the U.S. according to the American Lung Association’s State of the Air report. Ground-level ozone pollution is highest in these cities, as well as in Visalia, Bakersfield, and Fresno-Madera-Hanford, California. Phoenix-Mesa, Arizona is the outlier in this group. On the other end of the spectrum, Honolulu, Johnson City, Lincoln, Bangor, and Wilmington have the cleanest air. Dr. Sarah Rees explains that mobile sources are a major contributor to ozone pollution, while particle air pollution comes from sources like wildfires and diesel engines. Despite the high pollution levels, ozone levels in Southern California are improving.
