Minnesota state senator Nicole Mitchell was charged with first-degree burglary of her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes. Mitchell, a former local TV meteorologist and Air Force veteran, denied stealing and claimed she was retrieving her late father’s belongings. She was allegedly found wearing black clothing, with a torch covered by a black sock. Mitchell said her stepmother cut off contact after her father’s death and she was trying to get his ashes and sentimental items. Some lawmakers are calling for her resignation, but she maintains her innocence. Mitchell faces a $35,000 fine, 20 years in prison, or both if convicted.
