Former U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss found herself at the center of another lettuce-related prank during a pro-Donald Trump speaking event in Suffolk, England, on Tuesday night. While discussing her support for the former U.S. president and the current economic struggles facing Americans, Truss was unwittingly overshadowed by a banner.

Unbeknownst to Truss, a banner featuring a googly-eyed lettuce with the words “I crashed the economy” slowly descended from the ceiling behind her. Ironically, she was dressed in a green, leafy-colored dress, adding to the humorous spectacle.

It wasn’t until someone joined her on stage and pointed out the banner that Truss realized what had happened. The person she was speaking with claimed ignorance about the banner’s origin, prompting hesitant giggles from the audience. Truss looked at the banner and curtly said, “That’s not funny,” before storming off the stage to a reluctant smattering of applause.

The prank was orchestrated by the activist group Led By Donkeys, drawing inspiration from a famous previous stunt by the Daily Star. The newspaper had set up a livestream to determine whether a lettuce or Truss’s tenure at Downing Street would last longer following her mini-Budget fiasco. The lettuce won that contest.

Within hours, a one-minute video of the latest stunt went viral, amassing 2.3 million views in less than 12 hours. Led By Donkeys had recently pulled a similar prank on Reform UK’s Nigel Farage by unfurling a banner with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the words “I ❤️ Nigel” behind him during a campaign event.

Truss’s angry reaction came just hours after she had publicly supported free speech on social media platform X. She had written, “I am appalled by the attacks on free speech in Britain and Europe. We can’t be truly free without free speech. Good for Elon Musk and X for standing up to these bullies.” Her comments were a response to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s pledge to hold social media companies accountable for not adequately policing their platforms, especially in light of recent far-right, anti-immigration riots in the U.K.

After losing her parliamentary seat, Truss has been trying to re-establish her career in the U.S. She has become a vocal supporter of Trump and has consistently tried to shift the blame for her disastrous mini-Budget from herself to the Bank of England.
