NPR: China’s attempts to influence the U.S. surpass TikTok efforts

A new law in the United States has been passed that would ban TikTok unless its Chinese owner, ByteDance, sells the app to address national security concerns. Lawmakers fear that the Chinese government could use TikTok to collect data on Americans, surveil them, and spread misinformation. China has been increasing its online information operations to influence U.S. politics. Efforts include creating fake social media accounts to spread misinformation. While TikTok has been used in Chinese operations, there is no specific focus on the app. In Taiwan, China has used TikTok to try to influence politics, but these efforts have not been successful.
