One climber fatally injured, another survives with traumatic injuries following 1,000-foot fall in Alaska’s Denali National Park

One person died and another was seriously injured after falling 1,000 feet while climbing Mt. Johnson in Alaska’s Denali National Park. The climbers were on the “the Escalator” route, a difficult alpine climb. Another climbing party witnessed the fall and alerted authorities. Rescuers attended to the injured climber overnight before airlifting them to a hospital. Bad weather prevented recovery of the deceased climber’s body. The identity of the deceased climber is being withheld until their family is notified. Ranger will attempt recovery when weather allows.
