Only Murders in the Building Season 4: Star-Studded Hollywood Trailer

Who killed Sazz Pataki? This burning question sets the stage in the newly released trailer for Only Murders in the Building season 4. The amateur podcasting trio—Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selina Gomez)—are thrust into another mystery after the shocking murder of Charles’ stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), at the end of season 3.

As they delve into whether Sazz or Charles was the intended target, the trio heads to Los Angeles. There, a Hollywood producer, played by Saturday Night Live‘s Molly Shannon, is gearing up to make a film about their true-crime podcast, “Only Murders in the Building.”

This adventure draws them close to the stars of the impending movie version of their podcast: Emmy winner Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek) portrays Charles, Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) steps into the role of Mabel, and Emmy nominee Zach Galifianakis (Baskets) is scheduled to play Oliver in an amusing twist where Oliver mistakes Galifianakis for “the little boy from Home Alone.”

Their investigation sees Charles, Oliver, and Mabel returning to New York. Back at the Arconia, they embark on an even grander journey, exploring the twisted lives of the West Tower residents, including Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton).

In the new season, viewers can expect to see returning faces such as three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep as actress Loretta Durkin and Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Detective Donna Williams. In addition to these familiar faces, new guest stars will include Kumail Nanjiani (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Richard Kind (Spin City), and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) as Charles’ sister. Lynch’s Sazz is set to appear throughout the 10-episode fourth season, even posthumously.

Series co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman hinted at the impactful season-ending death in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. The decision to eliminate Sazz, a fan-favorite since season one, came from executive producer Jess Rosenthal. Rosenthal proposed the idea as a plot twist to kick off the Hollywood-centric season 4.

“He said, ‘What if?’ and immediately upon hearing it, I thought, ‘That’s awful and that’s perfect,'” Hoffman recounted. “It was the catalyst for a flood of new ideas, which was thrilling.”

Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building premieres on August 27th on Hulu.
