Police in Austin, Texas, responded to over 50 opioid-related overdose calls linked to eight deaths. The surge began Monday at around 9 a.m. and was concentrated in the downtown area before spreading citywide. The average daily opioid calls increased from 2-3 to 51. Patients were in their 20s to 50s, reminiscent of a 2015 mass overdose outbreak. Over 267 Narcan doses were distributed, saving lives. Four suspected overdose deaths were reported, and eight deaths are under investigation. Two persons of interest were detained, one charged with felony possession of a firearm. Further charges are pending.
