Origins Revisits the ’90s and Beyond: Key Insights to Discover

Before Leroy Jethro Gibbs became an iconic figure, he was a rookie NIS agent struggling with the heartbreaking loss of his wife Shannon and daughter Kelly, both murdered. NCIS has touched on this tragedy, but fans are now set to witness the immediate consequences and Gibbs’ subsequent killing of Pedro Hernandez, the drug dealer responsible for their deaths.

NCIS: Origins will delve into the younger Gibbs’ life in fascinating detail. The series introduces viewers to Gibbs when he is inexperienced and eager to prove himself under the leadership of Mike Franks. Their unit is portrayed as a tough and rebellious team, suggesting intriguing on-field dynamics as they tackle various cases.

Longtime enthusiasts are particularly excited about exploring the early relationship between Franks and Gibbs. Showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal revealed to TVLine that viewers will see Gibbs in a “different kind of shading,” with a sense of admiration in his eyes when he looks at Franks.

This series provides a fresh look at Gibbs as a newcomer and sheds light on how he evolved into the beloved character known in the flagship show. North assured fans that there’s plenty of rich material to mine, as this backstory is set 12 years before NCIS began.

“They don’t know as much as they think they do. Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore,” North mentioned.

The journey kicks off on Monday, Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. ET, right after the premiere of NCIS‘s twenty-second season. The launch of NCIS: Origins will span a two-hour premiere. However, the series will settle into its regular 10 p.m. time slot starting Oct. 21. New episodes will be available for streaming on Paramount+ the day after airing. The official episode count has yet to be revealed.

Notably, Mark Harmon will return to the franchise not just as an executive producer, a role he shares with his son Sean Harmon, but as the narrator for this prequel.

Here’s a look at the cast:

Austin Stowell as Leroy Jethro Gibbs – We meet Gibbs in 1991, just starting his NIS career, grappling with grief while navigating a new organization following his Marine service.

Mariel Molino as Special Agent Lala Dominguez – A former Marine like Gibbs, Dominguez’s experience is uniquely her own due to being a woman in a male-dominated field, marked by a sharp sense of humor and sheer determination.

Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks – Franks is a Texan through and through, evident by his cowboy boots and mustache. He leads his team with strong moral principles and a relentless pursuit of justice.

Tyla Abercrumbie as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo – Known as the “lifeblood of the Camp Pendleton office,” Mary Jo efficiently manages the team and is fiercely protective of her unit.

Diany Rodriguez as Special Agent Vera Strickland – Fans recognize Vera from “Under the Radar” in season 11. Young Vera, Franks’ no-nonsense partner from Brooklyn, deals with so-called “misogynistic morons” head-on.

Caleb Martin Foote as Special Agent Benjamin “Randy” Randolf – Randy, the team’s golden boy, is tasked with training Gibbs. Patience is his forte, which he brings into play while tutoring the rookie agent.

Daniel Bellomy as Special Agent Granville “Granny” Dawson – An Evidence Custodian’s assistant and fellow probie of Gibbs, Granny aims to rise through the ranks and become a field agent.

Robert Taylor as Jackson Gibbs – Taking over from the late Ralph Waite, Taylor plays Gibbs’ “hardnosed father,” adding depth to their relationship in the wake of personal loss.

Patrick Fischler as Special Agent in Charge Cliff Walker – Determined to earn respect for the Pendleton branch, Walker’s actions often put his career on the line to ensure his team’s standing within NIS.

Julian Black Antelope as Chief Medical Examiner Kai Blackrock – Known for his composed nature, Blackrock is a top-tier M.E. whose connection with NIS reveals unexpected vulnerabilities.

Lori Petty as Dr. Lenora Friedman – A seasoned pathologist with a lively personality, Dr. Friedman’s passion for her job makes her a distinctive figure in the San Diego M.E.’s office.

Bobby Moynihan as Woodrow “Woody” Browne – As the senior chemist and director of the NIS Forensic Lab, Woody juggles too much but keeps the workplace atmosphere light with his offbeat humor.

Though an official trailer is yet to be released, fans can watch CBS’ Conversations Between Stars to get acquainted with the prequel’s cast. Stay tuned for more updates on NCIS: Origins.
