Paul George Credits Philly Rapper for Persuading Him to Join the 76ers

On the latest edition of ‘Podcast P With Paul George’ presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment, Paul George had an engaging conversation with Philly rapper Lil Dicky about his surprising role in helping George decide to join the Philadelphia 76ers.

Paul George shared that a funny free agency video made by Lil Dicky was pivotal in his decision. “You did a funny free agency video. How did that come about? Did they reach out to you, about hey we need you?” George inquired. Lil Dicky responded with enthusiasm, indicating that his part in the video indeed influenced George’s decision.

George confirmed, “Yeah. It sold me, because obviously it was about like saving. What hit me was the part about saving money.” Lil Dicky probed further, expressing surprise that his effort had such an effect, to which George admitted, “It impacted me, it had a little touch on me.”

Lil Dicky elaborated on how he got involved: “He (Daryl Morey) said ‘Hey, would you be interested in being part of the pitch video,’ and I said ‘absolutely.’ I thought about what would be pertinent information. Look, I’m from Philadelphia, and I know where your dollar goes. I have a house in L.A., and if I spent the same amount of money on that house in Philadelphia, it’d be like 100X bigger. Your bang for your buck goes so much further in Philadelphia.”

Brimming with excitement, George promised Lil Dicky a place on his victory float if he wins a title with the 76ers. “When you win, I have to be, if not on the float, the float behind the float where all the wives are,” Lil Dicky joked. “Got you, no, you’re on my float bro, we going to float it out,” George assured him.

Following his conversation with Lil Dicky, Paul George signed a colossal four-year, $212 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Center Joel Embiid is optimistic about the new dynamics with George and Tyrese Maxey. “The fit, it looks amazing… you need to have willing shooters and guys that are not afraid to pull the trigger. PG, great shooter,” Embiid told ESPN.

Embiid also believes George’s presence will contribute to his own well-being. “It makes me excited, because I think that actually might keep me healthy,” Embiid explained. “I don’t have to exert myself and make sure I have to have 30, 40 every single night for us to win, and I can let them do their thing. There will be some nights where they got it going and that’s OK… but if I have 10 or 15 [points], yeah that’s fine.”

While acknowledging there will also be nights where he has to step up, Embiid emphasized the balance George and Maxey will bring to the team. “So, it all evens out at the end of the day. But I think the goal is just to allow those guys to just be themselves, so I don’t have to… in the playoffs, that’s another story. Now we can get going. But in the regular season, just allow them to feel good about themselves and just play well.”

It’s worth noting that Embiid is currently representing his first appearance in the Olympics, adding another layer to his already busy and exciting year.
