PBS Short Film Festival 2024: Celebrating Storytelling

Recently on Good Vibes, Taryn Stewart, the Director of Editorial and Brand Engagement at PBS, discussed the upcoming 2024 PBS Short Film Festival. Now in its 13th year, the festival will take place from July 15 to July 26, focusing on the art of short-form storytelling.

The theme for this year’s festival is “Story Time,” celebrating the impactful narratives that short films can deliver. Films for the festival are selected by twelve media partners, including Black Public Media and the Center for Asian American Media. This ensures that a diverse range of voices and perspectives are represented. The selection process begins in January, involving the review of over 100 submissions, which are ultimately narrowed down to 15 films.

A key highlight of the festival is its accessibility. All films will be available on PBS’s digital platforms, such as the PBS app, the PBS Short Film Festival Facebook page, and the PBS YouTube channel, making them easily accessible to a wide audience.

The films cover various themes, categorized into family, heroes, environments, and society. Notable entries include a mixed media piece addressing personal space invasions in the New York subway system, a musical presented by Louisiana Public Broadcasting, a story about a man on the autism spectrum facing housing threats, and a film featuring a 75-year-old Black man living on the streets of Hollywood striving for redemption.

The festival aims to take viewers on an emotional journey, offering a mix of lighthearted, fun, profound, and thought-provoking films. Viewers are encouraged to tune in and support the filmmakers, celebrating creativity and impactful storytelling.
