Plane with fire on board crashes in Alaska after pilot attempts return to airport

One of the two pilots of a vintage military plane delivering heating oil to a remote Alaska Native village reported a fire on board before the aircraft crashed outside Fairbanks, killing both. The C54D-DC plane crashed 7 miles outside Fairbanks, bursting into flames near the Tanana River with no survivors. Recovery efforts were hindered by thin ice and open water. Witnesses described an explosion during flight before the crash. The plane, built around 1942, had a history of service and ownership changes. Delivering fuel to rural Alaska villages is challenging and expensive due to limited road access.
