Police say bear removed crash victim’s body from car in woods near Massachusetts highway

A bear is believed to have dragged a crash victim’s body out of his car in Hatfield, Massachusetts, State Police reported. 31-year-old Daniel Ducharme was likely killed in the crash on Route 91. Another driver noticed a car in the woods and called the police. When first responders arrived, they found Ducharme’s body outside the car and a bear in the woods. The bear fled while troopers were at the scene. Ducharme lost control of his car, hit a guardrail, went off the road, and hit trees before being dragged by the bear. Hatfield is in the black bears’ established range in Massachusetts, where more than 4,500 bears are estimated to live. Wildlife officials remind residents that bears are active in the spring.
