Prince Harry: King Charles’s Bond with Meghan Strengthened by Special Detail

Before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry chose to step down from the royal family and give up their senior titles in January 2020, the Duchess of Sussex had a particularly close relationship with her father-in-law, King Charles. Their bond notably strengthened when the future monarch discovered that the duchess shared a birthday with someone very important to him.

In an excerpt from Prince Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” the Duke of Sussex openly discussed the connection between King Charles and Markle. He revealed how their relationship, already strong, bloomed further when the king found out that the “Suits” actress was born on the same day as his “favorite person,” his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

“Towards the end of summer 2018 we went to Scotland, the Castle of Mey, to spend a few days with Pa,” Prince Harry recounted, as detailed by Hello! Magazine. “The bond between Meg and Pa, always strong, grew even stronger during that weekend.”

Prince Harry described an evening during that visit where the revelation about Markle’s birthday came up during pre-dinner cocktails. With Fred Astaire playing softly in the background, it was discovered that Meghan shared her August 4th birthday with King Charles’ cherished grandmother, affectionately known as Gan-Gan.

Upon learning this, King Charles responded with joy and nostalgia. He began sharing heartfelt stories about his grandmother, visibly uplifted by the connection between Gan-Gan and Meghan. Prince Harry wrote, “‘Amazing,’ Pa said with a smile. At the memory of Gan-Gan, and the link between her and my bride, he suddenly became buoyant, telling stories I’d never heard, essentially performing, showing off for Meg.”

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 30, 2002, at the age of 101. Her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, was by her side during her final moments. The Queen Mother’s death occurred just under two months after her other daughter, Princess Margaret, died on February 9, 2002, at the age of 71.
