Promising Updates on ‘Supacell’ Season 2 Coming to Netflix

Supacell on Netflix has quietly been making waves, despite not reaching the #1 spot, it consistently held the #2 position and has stayed in the top 10 list for several weeks. Although there’s no official announcement for a second season yet, there are some encouraging signs.

Showrunner Rapman recently disclosed in an interview with Radio Times that he has mapped out plans for at least three full seasons of the series. This includes the first season and where he envisions the story heading.

“I’ve got a three-season story in my head. [I’m] not saying it can’t go over. But right now I know where it goes to. I know where… what the story is from up to season 3,” Rapman explained.

Without source material like a book or comic, Rapman is building the narrative from scratch. Pitching a three-year plan with a definite ending could give Netflix the confidence to invest in the series, ensuring the black-led superhero story concludes properly and doesn’t abruptly end after the first season. However, the potential challenge could be adjusting the story if Netflix opts for a shorter run than three seasons.

Supacell has also impressed critics, maintaining a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes since its release. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the relatively limited number of reviews it has received compared to other popular shows. This disparity likely highlights industry bias, especially for a series led by black heroes.

Considering its modest production costs and significant representation in a genre that often sidelines black superheroes (with few exceptions like Black Panther and Captain America: Brave New World), investing in additional seasons of Supacell could be a valuable move for Netflix. The existence of a comprehensive three-season plan bolsters this argument.

While Netflix seems to have improved slightly in allowing projects to complete their narratives, there’s never a guarantee. Supacell debuted on June 27, and it’s typical for shows that aren’t outright smash hits to await renewal news for about a month after release. Therefore, there’s still a window of hope for a second season announcement soon, and the potential looks promising.
