Prosecutors decide not to retry Arizona rancher accused of fatal shooting

Prosecutors in Arizona announced they will not retry George Alan Kelly after a deadlocked jury in the fatal shooting of a Mexican man on his ranch. The Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office decided not to seek a retrial due to unique circumstances. Kelly, 75, had been on trial for second-degree murder in the killing of Gabriel Cuen-Buitimea near the border with Mexico. Cuen-Buitimea lived in Nogales, Mexico, and was shot on Kelly’s cattle ranch. Prosecutors claimed Kelly fired recklessly, while Kelly argued he only fired warning shots. The trial took place during a presidential election year focusing on border security.
