‘Interstellar’ is one of the most acclaimed science fiction films of the 21st century, and this year it celebrates its tenth anniversary. Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, the film will return to theaters next fall to mark the occasion.
The plot of the film follows a journey in search of habitable planets where humans can live as the future looks bleak due to a lack of basic food supplies caused by the desolation of crops. Set in the year 2067, ‘Interstellar’ is inspired by a catastrophe that devastated the United States almost a century ago, known as the Dust Bowl.
The Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms that mainly affected the United States, causing widespread damage to the agricultural sector and leading to over three million people abandoning their farms during the Great Depression. It is estimated that around five million people died from hunger as a result of this catastrophe in the following years.
Prolonged droughts, combined with man’s manipulation of the land, resulted in devastating storms that were once referred to as ‘black wind’ and ‘black blizzards’.
