The “Bennifer” love story that first captured hearts more than two decades ago has concluded.

On Tuesday, Jennifer Lopez, 54, filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, 51, in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to TMZ and Variety. The filing coincided with the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony.

The separation date was reported as April 26 by the outlets.

USA TODAY has sought comments from representatives of both Affleck and Lopez.

This marks the end of Affleck’s second marriage and Lopez’s fourth. The couple had been engaged twice: initially in 2002 and then again in 2021.

Lopez’s decision follows months of media and fan speculation. The couple had been spotted attending public events separately.

At the Met Gala on May 6 in New York City, Lopez appeared alone as one of the event’s co-chairs, while Affleck was in Los Angeles participating in Netflix’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time: The Roast of Tom Brady.” Meanwhile, Lopez was reportedly filming “Kiss of the Spider Woman” in New Jersey, and Affleck was in Los Angeles for “The Accountant 2.”

Their first public appearance together in over a month was on May 16, where they were seen wearing their wedding rings. Since then, they have made occasional appearances together, though reports indicate they were no longer living together.

Lopez and Affleck met in 2002 on the set of the romantic comedy “Gigli,” during which Lopez was married to her second husband, Cris Judd.

Their first engagement ended in January 2004, with the couple citing excessive media attention as the reason. Lopez soon married Marc Anthony later that year, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme, born in 2008. They divorced in 2014. Affleck married actress Jennifer Garner in 2005, and they had three children: Violet, Fin, and Samuel. Their divorce was finalized in 2018.

In March 2019, Lopez became engaged to MLB star Alex Rodriguez, but the union was officially called off in April 2021.

Speculation of Affleck and Lopez rekindling their romance began shortly after her break-up with A-Rod. The rumors were confirmed in July 2021 when Lopez went Instagram official with Affleck on her 52nd birthday.

The couple attended major events and publicly displayed their affection, such as at the Venice Film Festival and the 2021 Met Gala.

In April 2022, Lopez announced their engagement again, this time with a rare green diamond ring, contrasting the famous pink diamond ring from their first engagement two decades prior.

The couple surprised fans in July 2022 by revealing they tied the knot in a late-night Las Vegas ceremony. Lopez described it in her newsletter as “the best possible wedding we could have imagined,” celebrating the event as a testament to their enduring love.

A month later, they held a formal wedding ceremony on Affleck’s property outside Savannah, Georgia.

As 2024 began, rumors of their potential split intensified as they continued to appear publicly without each other.
