Residents in South Carolina are reporting such loud cicada noise that they are calling the police

Residents of one South Carolina county are hearing loud noises that sound like sirens, whines, or roars, which are actually male cicadas singing to attract mates after being dormant for more than a decade. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office reassured people on Facebook that these cicadas pose no danger. Scientists wear earmuffs to protect their hearing from the loud sound of cicadas, which have already begun emerging in southern states like South Carolina. This year, two broods of cicadas are emerging, including Brood XIX and Brood XIII, with their next convergence not expected until 2037.
